Gamer cracks code, finds jewel | Chicago Tribune

With clean-cut looks, a steely-eyed stare and 25,000 lines of computer code, the Chicagoan has been catapulted from his humble roots as a computer gamer to the forefront of the geek-o-sphere, earning the title of “Hottest Hacker on Earth” and landing on the cover of Linux Journal.

Among the community of programmers who are shaping the look and usage of the Web, Heinemeier Hansson’s software tool, dubbed Ruby on Rails, is described as a gem. And in a swoon over his brazen personality, these programmers are rapidly turning into evangelical Ruby on Rails followers.

dailywireless.org - Seattle Web2.0 Startups

Web 2.0 startups are not exclusive to Silicon Valley. Seattle has lots, says John Cook the Seattle P-I’s venture capital reporter, who made a list of 64 Web 2.0 startups. Greg Linden, of Findory.com, put them in order by Alexa ranking.

As Cook says in the PI:

The list below — inspired in part by national Web 2.0 lists — was compiled today as I was struggling to come up with a column.

Daily Wireless has an interesting list of Web 2.0 Startups in Seattle. I’ll have to admit I haven’t heard of 80% of them.

Web2.0 Logo Creator by Alex P
This is meant to be a parody of Web 2.0 Logos. While they are pretty cool, they are all kinda the same. It was created as a joke, not a serious logo maker. But feel free to use it to make a logo. :P

A 16 year old school boy develops a programming language for Web

A 16 year old school boy develops a programming language for Web : News : Students : BCS

Patrick Collison, from Limerick, was given the title of Irish Young Scientist of the Year in 2005 beating off over a hundred other entrants

First off, what an unfortunate use of words, poor kid.

Anyway, why should we give someone an award for adding yet another stupid language to the confusing development environment we call the web? I’d kinda thing that CSS, Web 2.0, Ruby, Rails, PHP, Python, Perl, .NET, ASP, Cold Fusion, Flash, Java, Javascript, and about 80 dozen other languages were enough. Sheesh.

Besides, anyone can write a language and someone has, on average once a week since Fortran was released.

Google Spreadsheets - Sneak Peek

Google Spreadsheets - Sneak Peek

Creating spreadsheets

Create basic spreadsheets from scratch.
You can start from scratch and do all the basics, including changing the number format, sorting by columns, and adding formulas.

Upload your spreadsheet files.
Upload spreadsheets or worksheets from CSV or XLS format - all your formulas and formatting will come across intact.

Familiar desktop feel makes editing a breeze.
Just click the toolbar buttons to bold, underline, change the font, change the cell background color and more.

I just got my invite to Google spreadsheets. Very nice interface, similar to Open Office’s oocalc. I imported an xls sheet with no problems, saved it on the site, and have options to export as xls or csv. Very cool and appears to be full featured.

Ruby on Rails

Rails 1.1 is out for anyone who cares.

Rails is a full-stack framework for developing database-backed web applications according to the Model-View-Control pattern. From the Ajax in the view, to the request and response in the controller, to the domain model wrapping the database, Rails gives you a pure-Ruby development environment. To go live, all you need to add is a database and a web server.

U.S. Grants Patent For Broad Range Of Internet Rich Applications

InformationWeek | Pateents | U.S. Grants Patent For Broad Range Of Internet Rich Applications | February 22, 2006

Just as I think the patent office is pulling it’s head out of it’s collective ass it goes and does something stupid like this:

The patent–issued on Valentine’s Day–covers all rich-media technology implementations, including Flash, Flex, Java, Ajax, and XAML, when the rich-media application is accessed on any device over the Internet, including desktops, mobile devices, set-top boxes, and video game consoles, says inventor Neil Balthaser, CEO of Balthaser Online, which he owns with his father Ken. “You can consider it a pioneering or umbrella patent. The broader claim is one that basically says that if you got a rich Internet application, it is covered by this patent.”

havocStudios: Ajax tabs

AJAX, Web 2.0, CSS Tabs, can we get any more buzzwords in the same article? Still some useful info if you’re into that sort of stuff.

CSS Tabs seem to be all the rage with the kids these days. I love the idea of them. It seems that the most popular method of creating tabs using CSS is the Sliding Doors method. They seem to look the coolest and are very easy to implement. However, they’re so… static.
