How To Ruin a Ferrari

Filed under: Art, Stupid People, Transportation — anton @ 10:00 pm

I’m not so sure it’s ruined. I’d surely drive it given the chance. Just don’t expect me to park it outside a biker bar.

USATODAY.com - A life without left turns

A touching article about a guy’s memories of his father.

I should say I never saw him drive a car. He quit driving in 1927, when he was 25 years old, and the last car he drove was a 1926 Whippet.

“In those days,” he told me when he was in his 90s, “to drive a car you had to do things with your hands, and do things with your feet, and look every which way, and I decided you could walk through life and enjoy it or drive through life and miss it.”

The Traveling Tiger: Beached SUV limo

ROFL

Mike and I were having dinner at Goat Hill Pizza when a giant SUV limo appeared out of nowhere and promptly grounded out on the hill. I couldn’t resist taking photos…

R.U.S.H (RAPID UP SUPER HIGH): Human launching crossbow (with rockets)

R.U.S.H (RAPID UP SUPER HIGH): Human launching crossbow (with rockets)

There is no subtle way to say this: Brian Walker plans to shoot himself nearly 20 miles into the air aboard a homemade rocket launched from what could be the world’s largest crossbow. (Seriously.)

I bet this thing would get me to work in style. The kind of style one can only get by plummeting 20 miles through the atmosphere in a “ship” that’s modeled after the raptors of Battlestar Galactica.

James Bond-style strap-on jet pack

James Bond strap-on jet pack

The wing has aileron- and flap-like control surfaces along its trailing edge, and around 2 litres (0.5USgal) of jet fuel housed in flexible containers in its leading edge. The surfaces would be controlled by the parachutist using handles linked to servomechanisms.

This would be a helluva way to commute to work.

Eric Peltzer’s Electric Bicycle

ebike51.jpgEric Peltzer’s Electric Bicycle

I have added an electric power assist onto a GT mountain bike. It is much more powerful than typical electric bikes. The basic motivation for this was to have a fun and efficient and environmentally friendly way to stay out my car for short trips around town, and also as a silent trail bike for exploring the hills. It can still be pedaled. When I first put this together it was even more of a blast to ride than I had envisioned. I have seen 70 year old people get on this bike and laugh like little kids - it’s like a magic hand is silently boosting you along.

A very good article on bulding an electric bike from scratch.  I’ve been tempted to do this, but I don’t think I’d be able to carry enough batteries or move fast enough for my 30 mile commute.

Treehugger: The Power of One Solar Car Project

Cool project. Now if it’s just help me commute to work on the cheap.

Marcelo da Luz isn’t an engineer or a millionaire. He’s a flight attendant from Toronto. But, in keeping with his last name, his dream has been to build a solar car and pilot it across Canada to set a world distance record. After years of work and a shoestring budget, his craft is almost ready.
