Stupid News Report and some Winter Blast Advice.

Filed under: General, Stupid People, Television, Transportation — anton @ 1:15 pm

Those of you up north or who grew up driving in winter, please skip this post.

I wish I had the exact quote, but this idiot was on WOAI TV (in San Antonio) this morning telling motorists that if they find themselves on snow or ice to shift down to first or second gear.

It’s never a good idea to downshift on ice. It’s no different than hitting the brakes and can cause your tires to slide. Take your foot off the gas, steer into the slide (turn in the same direction your rear is sliding) and pray you regain control before you hit the wall.

If you’re sitting still and have a stick, try starting in 2nd gear. It’ll reduce the torque to the wheels and make it harder to spin out.

Tires work best when they roll. Once they start sliding or spinning you’ve lost traction and control. You cannot hope to regain control until the tires start rolling properly again.

Just SLOW DOWN! 4×4, rear drive, or front wheel drive cars all stop at the same rate on ice, even if they accelerate at different speed.

Fox’s joke on fan just plain mean

Charlotte Observer | 09/06/2006 | Fox’s joke on fan just plain mean

The Carolina Panthers’ most famous fan just got run over by Fox Sports.

It wasn’t pretty, and it wasn’t fair. Fox Sports did a bad thing to a good man on national TV Aug. 24, and I’m furious about it.

O.J. pulls Bronco prank for pay TV show - REALITY TV , ‘IDOL’ - MSNBC.com

What is the world coming to? I sure hope that this show fails horribly and restores a little bit of my faith in humanity.

In a scene from his new candid-camera program “Juiced,” O.J. Simpson pulls a prank involving a white Bronco, drawing criticism from the family of a man he was accused of killing.

Cool PVR/TV built from an old (1952) Phillips TV Console

Filed under: Television — anton @ 9:50 am

PVR works great! Now if only I was deaf…

Cool idea, but he should have gone with MythTV instead of using Windows.

I started out with a 1952 Philips TV console that I picked up for $40 at an estate sale.

Star Wars: Community | Putting Star Wars to the MythBusters Test

I love these guys. Their show is the only one that I miss now that we don’t have cable or satellite.

Is it possible to drive a Podracer at 900 mph or more without a windshield or face mask? Could you survive a 50-foot fall into a snow bank like Luke Skywalker? Can you avoid freezing to death in a blizzard overnight by gutting a dead animal like a tauntaun and getting into its carcass?

Miglia’s TVMini HD brings HDTV to mac via USB 2.0 - Engadget

Nifty idea, but why can’t they make one that’d nest nicely with a mac mini?

Mac users in search of an HDTV solution might find some help from Miglia Technology and their TVMini HD, a USB 2.0 device to watch, pause, and record HDTV. The device requires a 500MHz G4 or greater to handle the bandwidth, and is powered by Elgato’s EyeTV DVR software, which can also export iPod and PSP formats.

NBC.com>The Book Of Daniel

I agree wildly entertaining and an awesome cast. I’d have to throw in well written. The Book of Daniel is a must see show.

Letterman restraining order a ‘mistake’

Advocate: Letterman order a ‘mistake’

Ya think she might be in trouble? If she isn’t totally nutters, she’s liable. Either way, she’s in over her head.

A local advocate for the mentally ill believes a woman who recently received a temporary restraining order against talk-show host David Letterman might be in “considerable trouble.”
