Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Movie)

I’ve now seen the movie twice (last night and this afternoon) and now that I’ve had a nap I think I’m ready to comment on it.

I really like this adaptation. It has been a while since I read the book so I might be fuzzy on some details, but I don’t think anything critical was changed or omitted.

Possible spoilers after the jump.

The opening scene rocked. While it didn’t meet my vision from reading the book, it was good and had the right mood. I always pictured Little Whinging as a lot more urban and less countryside.

The whole series of scenes around DA was great. I was curious how they would convey so much of the fear and excitement around not getting caught and I feel they pulled it off well.

The fight scene was fun and exciting, although I thought they dragged the possession bit out too long. Fudge’s last comment was funny: “He’s Back!”. I think half the audience last night said “no shit” in unison. The crowd this afternoon was much younger and just laughed.

Well, that’s my take. Please post comments and let me know what you thought.

  8. I’ll agree that the fight scene could have been a bit longer. I was hoping for a better chase scene too but I can understand why it didn’t make the cut.

It is very difficult to make a movie just like the book, especially when the book is as long as OOTP. I think they packed a lot of story in 2 hours and 10 minutes.

  9. Yer, They didnt put in all the details about the chase. Like they didnt put in all the accidents and injuries about what happened to the gang. After the movie me and a friend sat down and just talked about all the important stuff that happened in the books that should have been in the movie but wasnt.
Yes, they did put in heaps of stuff for the movie but i just didnt like it as much as i thought it would. I mean, in a while it will grow on me but right now i think they could hav done way better.

  10. i prefure the books to the movie cus the books have all the action and everything and the movies cut out stuff

  11. I have always separated the movies from the books. They tell the same story, but hey do so in different ways.

I encourage people to read the books though, as they are interesting, well written, and a nice piece of literature, despite what some critics say. The movies are a different form of entertainment and the stories have to be modified some to fit. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, just different.

  12. SPOLIER WARNING ON KEY THINGS THE MOVIE WAS MISSING STOP READING IF YOU DON’T WANNA KNOW!

okay i felt to movie was very rushed
    No Quidditch No Ron winning
    No Hermonie going to Rita
No Harry and Cho Valentine Date
No Dobby Neville found the room of rec
    No fienze
    No SPEW
    Cho’s friend tells not Cho
Ginny gets the gang out of Unbridges office
No cleaning Grimmald Place nothing on Sirius’s bro?
The weasley twins don’t make the corrider into a swamp
    And a million more

I know they had to make exceptions and cuts but even if they couldnt show us they could of had the 3 talking about it like quidditch or cho and harry’s date or the new divination teacher or Ron could have made fun of Hermionie for SPEW??? or even a look at the paper which could show Hermionie and Rita… It was a great movie but it was off from the book!!

  13. Yer i reckon, now that u put it in a list it is really obvious. They also didnt put in the mirrors that sirius gave to harry.
Im gettin the book on Satday. YAY!!
Did You Know that one fifth of the population(that read the books) skip to the last page to see what happens to harry. I swore to myself that i wouldnt give in to temptation.

  14. I think in the Goblet of fire the scene with Sirius talking to harry through the fire was better than in the Order Of The Pheonix, and i think the fight in the ministry should have gone for longer.

  15. I want to read the last page of Deathly hallows but i dont want to spoil the ending and the suspension when reading the book!!!

Damn but i will survive untill the end.

  16. Hay i no total random

    Lol hehehe

  17. they didnt even show the proper entrance to the Weasley leaving the school like telling Peaves to look after in taking controll of the mistief in the school.
And i would have liked 2 have seen SPEW coz that would have been funny and all and they didnt put anything on Siriu’s screaming mother.

  18. i know they had to cut stuff but i really would have loved to see the part with Rita Skeeter! and the fight should have been longer! i love Harry Potter the way it was i hope the next movie is better because more people watch the movies then read the books so i think it needs to be accerate for their sake!

    Comment by Veronica — July 16, 2007 @ 11:35 am

  19. i wont skip to the end and read but i will skip to the end to see if the last word is scar

  21. They made the longest book into the shortest harry potter movie..they could have done a better job.

    Comment by shlee — July 16, 2007 @ 6:12 pm

  22. Runtime for the all the movies so far:

    SS - 152 min
    COS - 161 min
    GOF - 157 min
    POA - 141 min
    OOTP - 138 min

I suspect that part of the reason OOTP is shorter is for the IMAX 3D version. IMAX has just recently broke the 2 hour limit with the addition of more platters on the projectors.

Movies use to be cut to shreds to fit on IMAX, now they can compromise and save a significant cost in post production.

    Comment by Anton — July 16, 2007 @ 8:57 pm

  23. yer i reckon the movie should have gone longer for the people who dont read the books b/c it can then get confusing!!!
OOTP is so far the shortest movie made of Harry Potter acording 2 Anton……….

  24. when Fudge says: “He’s Back” i would probablly say the whole audience laughed and had a reply 2 that like no **** sherlock…. lol

  25. I wonder who sed that, LOL…
Im sorry that i couldnt go to that hp thing with u, Lav. I really am. I hope that u and ur OTHER best friend (LOL)have a gewd time. But dont feel upset b/c that morning i have to get up at 5am go to the farm fantastic thing go pick up the hp book then go home and curl up in my bed and read all nite. Afta im finished with the book, ill let u borrow it b/c ur like 40 on the list for the library and hopefully i’d be done by then.

BTW Veronica apparently the last word isnt scar anymore b/c JK extended it.

And if the IMAX cut the movies to shreds anyway, why go see it in the IMAX?

DO you reckon afta the last book, OOPT will still be the longest? lol

  26. ugh this director is the director for the next film! thats so dumb… JKR cannot like what she saw but once you sell the rights, all bets are off! I mean i cannot imagen her liking all the changes! Everything with Cho and Harry changed… I must admit though this movie had me laughing at points! But did anyone noticed Sirius was hit by the Avada curse before falling in the Veel???

    Comment by Veronica — July 17, 2007 @ 4:22 pm

  27. I hope the Deathly Hallows is the longest coz it should be!! coz its the last book n the 6th one should have been longer so i hope J.K.Rowling makes up 4 that with makin Deathly Hallows longer!!!!

    Comment by Lavendar — July 18, 2007 @ 12:22 am

  28. Yes Veronica Total Random n i went n saw it on the Friday night wen it first came out, n we both noticed that about Sirius!!!

I thought that when Sirius was talking to harry in the 4th movie through the fire i thought that was better n way cooler than in the latest movie coz it was like sirius was like a hologram(dont no how 2 spell that. Oh well!)

There were bits i thought that could have improved except when sirius was in the fire like I said before.
